Pomeranians are Toy dogs whose appearance and functions changed in the course of time. From a dog weighing about 20-30 pounds and used basically as a herd dog the Pomeranian made a great leap to a tiny companion. The 20th century is thought to be the Pomeranian's rise in terms of popularity. They are distributed mainly in the UK and the US.
The American Kennel Club set the breed standard which points out the acceptable height and weight, states characteristic traits a purebred Pomeranian should display, and enumerates a number of features, the owner of which is doomed to be disqualified. Pomeranians - Puppies - Weight
The approximate weight of the Pomeranian is 3-7 pounds. Some dogs can weigh more than that as the result of crossing true Pomeranians with non-pedigree dogs. The extreme size is said to be about 20-25 pounds. Obviously, no Pomeranian owner worth the name will ever attempt to call such a dog a Pomeranian.
Pomeranian breeders sometimes run into another extreme. They try to produce puppies as little as they can be. But is it not absurd to breed down a dog that is already too small? Such "wonders" are prone to a great number of diseases and there is a high death rate among such puppies.

It is important to know that there is not such a notion as the Standard, or the Toy Pomeranian. All Pomeranians should conform to the unified standard (3-7 pounds), and any deviations should indicate a non-purebred dog.
Quite a different thing is a desired weight in a Pomeranian. It is a conventional opinion that dogs about 4-5.5 pounds are suited best for a show ring. For this very reason some people are eager to purchase a medium-sized Pomeranian puppy. However, Pomeranians weighing a little bit more, or a little bit less are also wonderful pets whose health conditions and personality features are not likely to cause any trouble.
Pomeranians - Puppies - Color Patterns
Pomeranian breeders offer puppies in a variety of colors. Among the most frequent ones are red, orange, tan, cream, white, and black. Wolf sable is sometimes seen in puppies. However, as adult dogs they tend to jump to their true colors. Thus, adult Pomeranians colored wolf sable are rare.
Pomeranians - Puppies - Litter Size:
As a rule, Pomeranians do not have large litters. The number of puppies averages 1-3 little ones. Pomeranians are rather small and need special treatment.
